Version 1.0.1 - Now With Sound!
Hello, I'm Carmen, the Lead Developer.
When we first made Umbralyte, it was a completely different game. The original vision had you, the Sun God, going on a journey across the desert to fight your rival, the Moon God, and all of his acolytes along the way using a wide variety of weapons and powers. As we developed our major systems such as enemy AI, weapon handling, and pick ups, time marched on faster than we anticipated and we had to cut almost our entire scope. Multiple levels, enemy variety, true roguelike item interactions, all no longer on the table. In the end, we had a small killbox style arena with a couple weapons. To us and many others, it was still an enjoyable little romp, but it was not the game we set out to create.
Revisiting this project now over 7 months later and having released several projects since, the itch to give Umbralyte the chance it deserved grows stronger each day. There's no doubt in my mind we will return to it, now unrestricted with a much more clear vision, to deliver what we originally set out to create. Going forward, existing versions of this game will no longer reflect the intended vision as we move away from a killbox to something more substantial.
Until then, there is a new version available with a few minor changes, fixes, and the addition of sound effects.
Version 1.0.1:
Fixes:
- Ammo count no longer goes negative
- Fixed rare instance where enemies could shoot through walls
- Bullets and projectiles no longer collide with item pickups
- Eclipse timer no longer goes negative
- Weapons no longer "snap" in odd directions when moving
- Picking up a weapon and then immediately switching weapons no longer stutters or breaks
- Music now properly loops
Changes:
- Movement animations are much smoother
- Weapon sway is much smoother
- Procedural recoil system has been improved
- Weapon fire effects have been improved; better looking and no longer block your vision
- Explosions are much more visible and do more damage
- Enemies AI adjusted; they now fire at you in intervals with less projectiles to make them more fair
- The maximum number of enemies has been increased
- The message feed has been shortened and now tells you what items do in an easier to read fashion
Additions:
- Weapons, explosions, and movement now have sound effects
- The original gameplay song has been replaced with an original piece of music
Known Issues:
- Dual Wielding weapons is still completely broken; this requires an overhaul of the weapon system in order to be fixed
